Howe-Fogg family papers, 1834-1955.

Papers of the interrelated Howe family of Haverhill, Mass. and Fogg family of New Hampshire and Chicago, Ill. Fogg family papers consist of letters from James Pecker Fogg, his wife Emily Ware Fogg, and his brother Josiah Fogg, Jr. (b. 1811) to their parents and others, 1834-1837, about family and business matters; a trip from Boston to Savannah, Ga. and Jacksonville, Fla.; slavery, including the separation of a slave family in Jacksonville; and the Second Seminole War, including a description of Chief Osceola (May 1837). The collection also contains papers of Francis Saltonstall Howe, 1848-1878. Howe married Frances "Fanny" Jane Fogg, the daughter of James P. Fogg. Included are letters from his father Isaac Redington Howe about his education at Harvard; correspondence with his mother Sarah Saltonstall Howe and his sister Mary Howe Carleton about family matters; papers related to Harvard and his law career; and a large number of courtship letters to and from Fanny J. Fogg, ca. 1865 but mostly undated. Additional family papers include letters of Francis' daughters, Mary Ware Howe (later Straus) and Caroline Howe (later Packard).
